EMPOWER THE HEARX GROUP TO DRIVE GREATER SOCIAL IMPACT IN SOUTH AFRICA
hearX Group’s 3E - Ears & Eyes for Education programme was chosen as one of the twelve non-profit organisations in South Africa to get a share of $2m in the Google Impact Challenge and now has the opportunity to double our funding.
Globally, 32 million children have permanent hearing loss, whilst 19 million are visually impaired. 90% of these children reside in low and middle income countries (LMICs). Sensory impairments impact childhood development and academic success. In LMICs like South Africa, early detection services are inaccessible due to prohibitive costs and lack of trained personnel. hearX Group, in partnership with the Carel du Toit Centre & Trust, are implementing a decentralised programme, (Ears & Eyes for Education), to ensure access to healthy hearing and vision services to open the way to learning for preschool children. This innovative model utilises mHealth solutions, operated by non-professionals recruited from the community, to provide joint sensory screening and linkage to care. Our programme aims to reach 10,000 children by April 2019 and we are planning to scale the model across South Africa.
